Community Access and Daily Living Activities
Here at Kalliopi Support Services, we feel that connecting with one’s community has the potential to contribute greatly to increasing self-confidence and developing the ability to be more independent. With our Community Access and Daily Living Activities services, we intend to provide NDIS participants with the opportunity to engage in activities of daily life, access necessary services, and develop themselves through these means.
Community access service allows you to become a part of your community with the support that you require. Whether it be assisting you to visit a doctor, participate in a leisure activity, learn new things or access required assistance within your residential area, we will help you achieve the same with patience, understanding, and respect.
What makes our services unique is that our focus remains on the individual needs, interests, abilities and circumstances of the people.
Understanding the service
What Is Community Access?
Everyone should have opportunities to participate in their community. However, accessing the community may sometimes feel challenging because of individual circumstances, confidence levels, support needs or other barriers. Our Community Access support can help create practical pathways for participation. Depending on your individual needs and goals, support may include:
Beyond accompanying you
Our goal is not simply to accompany you. Wherever possible, we aim to help you develop the confidence and skills to participate more independently.
Meaningful for you
We work with you to identify activities that are meaningful and appropriate for your individual circumstances.
Practical pathways
Supporting You to Be Part of Your Community
Everyone should have opportunities to participate in their community. However, accessing the community may sometimes feel challenging because of individual circumstances, confidence levels, support needs or other barriers. Our Community Access support can help create practical pathways for participation. Depending on your individual needs and goals, support may include:
Your well-being first
Support for Medical Appointments
Attending medical appointments can be a vital part of looking after your well being. Sometimes, however, attending medical appointments can become challenging.
Accessing appointments, and getting to appointments and through the appointments process can be helped with further assistance.
Kalliopi Support Services can assist in helping people to access medical appointments under their personal support plan.
Our method respects you and is aimed at helping you access the services you need in a comfortable way.
Confidence through participation
Safe Access to Community Participation, Leisure and Recreational Activities
Taking part in activities within your community isn’t just about medical appointments. Participating in recreational activities allows you to build your confidence, gain new interests and socialise with other people.
We can help you access safe and appropriate leisure activities according to your needs and interests.
This might include looking at activities that you are interested in, practising skills for participation and building up your confidence in your environment.
It is more about helping you participate in leisure activities that are important to you.
Growth at your pace
Building Skills for Greater Independence
Developing New Skills
Learning a new skill can be a significant process in terms of achieving greater independence. In this regard, our organisation is willing to assist our participants in practising skills which are related to their personal goals — whether learning something new or improving existing skills. Practising, encouraging and moving towards achievement is what we strive for. We know that people learn differently, and it may take some time to practice certain skills. In contrast to concentrating just on accomplishing something, we will try to develop confidence and capacity for performing activities as effectively as possible wherever it is possible.
Improving Existing Skills
Participants might have certain skills they want to preserve or to enhance. Continuous practice is an important means of building confidence and maintaining participation in everyday activities. Assistance provided by us can facilitate practising existing skills in appropriate conditions, with due account of your needs and goals that are relevant for your life. A small step ahead can have great importance — even a slight enhancement of your abilities in accomplishing any activity can be significant for your future independence.
Home & daily life
Support Within Your Living Environment
Community Access and Participation in Activities of Daily Living could also refer to accessing crucial services within your living environment.
We acknowledge the fact that your home plays a very critical role in your day-to-day activities. With the right assistance, it could help you to develop routines and practice your skills.
The service is created to suit your needs and not just act on your behalf. Wherever suitable, we encourage participation to enable you to build capacity in the activity.
Gaining Confidence Through Activities of Daily Living
Confidence is acquired mainly through experience and practice. Engaging in activities of daily living can present you with an opportunity to learn and gain decision-making skills. Sometimes, things may take some time and participants might require more time, encouragement or a gentle pace when undertaking something new.
Kalliopi Support Services encourages taking things one step at a time.
You at the centre
A Person-Centred Approach to Community Access
You’re not like any other participant. You have your own aims, interests, strengths, experience and needs for support. In our person-centered approach, our starting point is always understanding your values.
The questions we ask include:
- Which activities are significant to you?
- Which activities would you like to engage in?
- What will ensure safety and comfort for you?
- Which skills would you like to learn?
- What will make it easier for you to participate in the community?
- Where are you wanting to grow your independence?
Through these questions, we get an understanding of how we could work with you.
Neuro-Affirming and Respecting Support
At Kalliopi Support Services, when providing support to participants, we use a neuro-affirming practice. We acknowledge that people might express themselves and receive input differently in terms of communication, learning processes, and perception. Understanding of every individual is what we are after – not making everyone fit into a mould. The provision of care from our side comes with warmth, understanding, and respect for each individual's strengths and preferences.
